At one point in time, we’ve all heard or thought this before. Whether you woke up with a new “friend” on your face, or you just can’t get rid of that thing, like c’mon its been 2 weeks!
What Ingredients Should I Be Avoiding?
Most products that contain additional ingredients that are only used for anti-bacterial purposes should be avoided. Now obviously brands need something to make sure that their products don’t go bad, but what I’m talking about here is the additional sulfates, silicones, alcohols, etc… There are many websites where you can search up all the ingredients in your skincare products to see what they’re used for, what it’s made from, and if it’s actually necessary and beneficial. Just be sure to glance at the ingredients list to make sure there are any harmful ones next time you’re shopping. Not sure which ingredients should be avoided? Let’s dive in!
Starting off with alcohol. Alcohols can be extremely drying for your skin, they are used as antibacterials / solvents in skincare, and they don’t provide any other benefits. If you can, avoid products with the following versions of alcohol…ethanol, isopropyl, methanol, glycol, and alcohol denat.
Next, there are essential oils. Now I know that there are many people who swear by essential oils and use them for everything but the truth is that they shouldn’t be used on sensitive, dry, or mature skin. They are so highly concentrated that they are too potent for our skin. If still use essential oils, be sure to dilute them with a carrier oil (ex. sweet almond, jojoba, or argan oil). Speaking of oils, one of the worst oils to include in your skincare is mineral oil. It is also referred to as liquid petroleum, paraffin oil, and mineral paraffin. So be sure to steer clear of those next time you shop for skincare. Petroleum is equally, if not worse, for your skin. It clogs you skin, and rather than moisturizing, it traps moisture in with a barrier but also traps moisture out, which drys your skin even more.
Similar to essential oils, fragrance should also be limited in your routine. Any wash off products (makeup remover, face wash, etc.) are okay as long as the fragrance isn’t too strong and irritating. I recommended staying away from serums, moisturizers, eye creams especially, or facial mists with fragrance; however, some brands classify essential oils as fragrance and those are a more natural source of scent if you chose.
Sulfates and parabens should be avoided in all beauty products. Skin, hair, body, you name it. Sulfates are used to help products foam up and lather and are most often found in body washes, soaps, and face washes. Parabens are used to prevent bacteria in lotions, shampoo, scrubs, and more. They have been found to have disrupt hormones and increase the risk of cancer.
